The legend

The lamya is a monster with several heads, wings and scales. She lives in caves and lakes and locks up the water so that no rain falls. She brings drought and hail, and in the tales the villages give her a sacrifice so she will release the springs. Only the zmey, the dragon, can fight her.

When hail struck the fields, people said the lamya had passed over them. When a river ran dry — that she had drunk it. The lamya is the shape of everything that takes the harvest: drought, storm, the hungry year.

Against her stands the zmey — the guardian of the village and its fields. When zmey and lamya fight in the clouds, it thunders and rains. In the tales a young hero cuts off her heads, and out of them flow water and grain — everything she had kept locked away.

The design

A three-headed winged lamya coiled around cracked dry earth. In the middle is the last drop, orange like blood. Her tail splits the words “Капка вода. Капка кръв.” — a drop of water, a drop of blood.
