Dark Folklore

Four legends your grandmother knew.

Old Bulgarian legends, worn in today's city. Four black tees and four old legends: kukeri, samodivi, lamya and orisnitsi. One logo on the front, one legend on the back.

Where they come from

The legend behind the print

  1. A man with the Kukeri print “Злото бяга” on his back, in the middle of a kukeri procession at night

    Kukeri

„Злото бяга“ — Evil runs away

Every winter, between New Year and Sirni Zagovezni, the kukeri go from village to village. They wear frightening masks with horns, fur, and heavy bells at the waist. The noise and the masks have one purpose: to drive evil away and bring health and a good year. The custom is so old that it is linked to the rituals of the Thracians.

  2. Three women in black tees with the “Самодиви” print on the back, holding hands, walking through a misty meadow at sunset

    Samodivi

    „Не влизай в хорото“ — Don't join the horo

Samodivi are forest maidens with white shirts and long hair. At night they dance the horo, a Bulgarian circle dance, in meadows and by springs, until the first roosters crow. Whoever steps into their horo does not come back. And where they have danced, no grass grows.

  3. A woman with the “Ламя” print on her back, sitting by a village fountain

    Lamya

„Водата има цена“ — Water has a price

The lamya is a monster with several heads, wings and scales. She lives in caves and lakes and locks up the water so that no rain falls. She brings drought and hail, and in the tales the villages give her a sacrifice so she will release the springs. Only the zmey, the dragon, can fight her.

  4. Three women in black tees with the “Орисници” print on the back, joined by a red thread, in an old candlelit village room

    Orisnitsi

„Нищо не е случайно“ — Nothing is by chance

The orisnitsi are three sisters who come on the third night after a child is born. They stand over the cradle and speak its fate: how long it will live and what it will become. The eldest has the last word, and no one can change it.
